Choose what to capture
In the large Capture card at the top, pick the full screen, a fixed region, an area you drag, the window you're using or an entire web page. The default is Full Screen.

Choose how to keep it
In SaveTo, pick an image such as PNG · JPG · WebP, MP4 video, text recognition (TXT), the clipboard and more. Only the formats available for the current capture mode are listed.

Press PrintScreen
With a shutter sound, the capture is saved to the save folder (the desktop at first) as
K-001.png. Next comesK-002.png. You don't even need to open the Kalmuri window. -

Just the part you drag, to the clipboard
With Drag, pressing the hotkey freezes and dims the screen. Drag over the part you want and only that part is kept. Choose Clipboard and paste it straight away with Ctrl+V, no file needed.

A long web page, top to bottom, in one image
WebBrowser saves a page open in Edge · Chrome as one image, including the part you'd have to scroll down to see. With several tabs open, the tab you're looking at is captured.

The same hotkey records too
Switch SaveTo to MP4 and PrintScreen starts recording; press it again to stop and save. While recording, the region frame turns red.
Anything, and only as much as you need
Region
Only the inside of a frame window, for the same place and size every time. Its position and size are remembered.
Drag
Drag to choose on a frozen screen. Even menus and notifications that only appear briefly.
Active Window
Just the window you're using. The desktop and other windows are left out.
Window Control
One button, input box or panel inside a window. Handy for manuals and support requests.
WebBrowser
An entire Edge · Chrome web page, to the end of the scroll, in one image.
Color Picker
Copies the color under the cursor as HEX · RGB · Web · TColor.
Fine-tune a region with the keyboard, down to the pixel. Arrow keys move it by 1 pixel; Ctrl+arrow resizes by 10 pixels and Shift+arrow by 1 pixel.

MP4 screen recording
Record the full screen or a region to MP4, with the sound playing on your PC if you like. The graphics card is used automatically when available. The Kalmuri window itself never appears in the video.
GIF · WebP animations
Record a region as an animation of up to 60 seconds, ready for forums and chats. Frame rate 10 · 15 · 20.
Mouse click effect
Show where you clicked. Ripple draws one blue ring for a left click and two orange rings for a right click; Highlight shows a yellow circle while a button is held down.
Leave it running and walk away
Set Limit recording time to 30 minutes · 1 hour · 2 hours · 4 hours and recording stops by itself. The mouse cursor in recordings is switched on and off separately from captures.
What happens after the capture matters too
Image files
PNG · JPG · GIF · BMP · WebP. For JPG · WebP, Quality 100 – 60 makes files smaller.
TXT
Reads the text on screen into K-001.txt. For text in images and documents that can't be copied.
Clipboard
To the clipboard, no file. With Clipboard also copies whatever you save.
Upload Imgbox
Uploads to the web and opens the image page. Share a link instead of a file.
Printer
Prints on the default printer the moment you capture.
Floating
Keeps the image on top, right where it was captured. For comparing two screens or copying values.
File names follow Sequence #1 (K-001, K-002 …), Sequence #2 (fills unused numbers) or DateTime (K-20260928-153012345). An existing file is never overwritten.

Capture the same place and size every time
Choose Region and a framed window appears in place of the main window. Drag the header bar to move it and the edges to resize it, then press PrintScreen to capture only what's inside the frame. Click the size (e.g. 640x480) for a list of sizes you use often; add or delete sizes in the presets window.
Cut out a single button in a window
Choose Window Control and a dotted frame follows the element under the mouse cursor. Hover over the button, input box or panel you want and press PrintScreen to save only that element.
Find the color code of something on screen
Choose Color Picker and the window shows the color and code under the cursor in real time. Press PrintScreen to add that color to the top of the list and copy it to the clipboard. Copy formats: HEX (FF9933) · RGB (255,153,51) · Web (#FF9933) · TColor ($003399FF).
Turn text in an image into text
Set SaveTo to TXT and a Text recognition language box appears next to it. Choose the language of the text and capture; it's saved as a text file. Combine it with Drag to recognize just the paragraph you need. The list shows the text recognition languages installed in Windows.
Record the sound from my PC too
Turn on Settings → Recording → Include sound to record what's playing on your PC — videos, games, notifications — along with the video. Turn it on for lectures and video playback.
Send a capture as a link
Set SaveTo to Upload Imgbox and capture: the image is uploaded and its page opens in your browser. Send the address instead of attaching a file.
Change the hotkey
Click the Settings → General → Hotkey box and press the combination you want (e.g. Ctrl+Shift+A); it changes right away. You can use PrintScreen, A – Z, 0 – 9, F1 – F12 and DEL, and you'll be told if another program already uses the combination.
PrintScreen opens the Windows Snipping Tool
Windows 11 has a setting that makes PrintScreen open the Snipping Tool. When Kalmuri's hotkey is PrintScreen, Kalmuri turns that setting off when it starts so the key comes to Kalmuri.
I closed the window but it's still running
The window's X hides Kalmuri in the tray rather than quitting. Click the tray icon to bring the window back. To quit completely, right-click the window or the tray icon and choose Quit.

Kalmuri doesn't update itself. If a new version is out, it tells you when it starts.
If a capture or recording contains other people's text, images, video or music, sharing it beyond personal use may require the rights holder's permission.
Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Yes. Kalmuri is freeware. Use it free of charge without restriction at work, at home, in government offices or at school, and redistribute it freely.
Do I have to install it?
No. With the portable version, unzip it and run Kalmuri.exe. The installer turns on Run on system start so Kalmuri waits in the tray every time Windows starts.
Does the window have to be open to capture?
No. Kalmuri keeps running in the tray after you close the window, so just press the hotkey from any screen.
Where are captures saved?
On the desktop at first. Change it with Set Folder in the right-click menu, and open it any time with Open Folder.
How long can I record?
MP4 has no limit, and you can set Limit recording time to have it stop by itself. GIF · WebP animations are up to 60 seconds and don't include sound.
Does it update automatically?
No. If a new version is out, Kalmuri shows a notice when it starts; click [Yes] to open the download page. The internet is used only for update notices, Upload Imgbox and WebBrowser capture.
